If you can stretch to an 8 3/4-hour flight (it’s quicker on the way back), Barbados is worth considering. CV Travel has Easy Reach, a gorgeous designer beach cottage that sits on Mullins Beach on the west coast, a five-minute drive from Speightstown. It’s decorated simply in white but the real draw is the open feel of the house. The living areas have bi-fold doors that open on to a covered dining terrace. This leads to a wooden deck, where you can relax on sun loungers and enjoy the views. Included is the service of a housekeeper/cook.

A luxury Caribbean villa suddenly becomes affordable when split between a dozen friends. Susan Ward Davies picks properties where you can holiday like a star. These two adjacent two-bed roomed cottages right on Mullins Beach have one of the best locations on the island, and are a snip by Barbados standards. What’s more, they don’t come with a fleet of staff, so if “informal” best describes your holiday style, this could be just the place for you. A short stroll from the famous Mullins Bar (now Manie’s), these bijou beach houses have small but comfortable rooms, sun decks just metres from the waves, and a Robinson Crusoe feel. Honeymooners could take over a whole cottage, but four sharing works out at around £50pp per night.
